MIPCOM Cannes faces industry disruption from AI and streaming
The MIPCOM Cannes international television market is undergoing a significant transformation driven by industry consolidation and technological disruption. While attendance saw a slight decline, with 10,100 delegates from 104 countries attending compared to 10,600 from 107 countries the previous year, organizers note that the market is shifting toward new players.
Lucy Smith, director of MIPCOM Cannes and head of the entertainment division at RX France, stated that the industry is experiencing “extraordinary disruption.” Key drivers of this change include the rise of artificial intelligence, vertical storytelling, and microdramas, which are challenging established formats. The convergence of traditional television and streaming continues to reshape the landscape.
Major studios are utilizing creative exhibition strategies to navigate these market realities. Paramount featured a 90% scale replica of its iconic Bronson Gate at its exhibition tent to showcase titles such as “The Angry Birds Movie 3” and “NCIS: New York.” Meanwhile, Banijay Entertainment returned with an expanded, two-storey wooden stand designed to align with its environmental mission.
