Miquelon village relocates one kilometer to combat rising sea levels
In the French archipelago of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, the village of Miquelon is undergoing a significant relocation to protect its 600 residents from rising sea levels. The project involves moving the community approximately one kilometer inland to higher ground.
French President Emmanuel Macron recently visited the construction site to observe the progress of the new settlement. Residents participating in the move, described as some of France’s first ‘climate refugees,’ are currently working to finish their homes after the primary structural work has been completed.
The relocation has caused local division. While some residents view the move as a proactive way to secure a future for their children, others express skepticism regarding the urgency of the threat or face financial and personal difficulties that make moving impossible.
