Mirafiori district launches zero-waste redistribution project in Turin
The Mirafiori district in Turin has implemented a ‘zero waste neighborhood’ project designed to facilitate the solidarity-based redistribution of food and essential goods. Initiated by the Fondazione della Comunità di Mirafiori, the project aims to bridge the gap between surplus resources and those in economic need.
The initiative operates through two established community hubs, Casa nel Parco and Cascina Roccafranca, which serve as physical nodes for collection and distribution. The project is part of the broader Torino Solidale network, a system coordinating local welfare interventions.
In practice, the mechanism intercepts items that would otherwise be wasted—such as food nearing its expiration date, clothing in good condition, and functional small appliances—and redirects them to residents facing hardship. Beyond providing basic necessities, the project seeks to promote active social inclusion rather than mere assistance.
