Miraflores cliff fire causes rockfalls and road closures in Lima

A large vegetation fire broke out on the cliffs of the Costa Verde in Miraflores, Lima, near Domodossola Park and the Larcomar shopping center on Sunday, October 4, 2026. The incident occurred during Peru's regional and municipal elections, causing heavy smoke and necessitating the evacuation of approximately 80 to 100 residents.

Emergency services, including nearly 20 units from the Cuerpo General de Bomberos Voluntarios del Perú, worked to control the blaze. The fire damaged approximately 800 to 1,000 square meters of vegetation and protective geomallas (geogrids) used to prevent rockfalls. The destruction of these structures led to reports of falling rocks in the area. One person was reported injured, treated for smoke inhalation and impacts from falling stones, but remains in stable condition.

Authorities temporarily closed sections of the Costa Verde highway to manage safety and facilitate firefighting efforts. While traffic has been progressively restored, officials are investigating the cause. Local authorities are treating the fire as suspicious, exploring hypotheses of arson or accidental causes such as a cigarette butt or a campfire, as there were no electrical cables or scheduled maintenance in the immediate area.
