Miraflores heritage tree damaged by truck accident

A container truck damaged a historic cedar tree in Miraflores on Monday, September 14. The impact caused a major branch to break and fall onto the vehicle's container. No injuries were reported during the incident.

The tree holds significant cultural value as the first official Heritage Tree of Miraflores, a status granted by the Municipal Council in 2020. It is famously associated with the Peruvian composer Chabuca Granda, who prevented its removal during road remodeling works in 1977 by physically embracing the trunk.

According to the Municipality of Miraflores, the heavy vehicle was traveling on Avenida Veintiocho de Julio, a route not authorized for trucks of that dimension. The driver was unable to provide a special permit for the transit. Municipal authorities used hydraulic arms and electric saws to clear the debris, and legal actions have been initiated by the Miraflores Prosecutor's Office regarding the damage to the protected specimen.
