Legambiente Ecosistema Urbano 2026: Mantova leads Italian sustainability rankings
The 2026 Ecosistema Urbano report, published by Legambiente and Ambiente Italia in collaboration with Il Sole 24 Ore, evaluates the environmental performance of 106 Italian provincial capitals. Mantova has claimed the top position with a score of 81.29%, followed by Trento (76.53%) and Bolzano (75.47%).
The report highlights a national average sustainability performance of 55.72%. While many medium and small cities in the North-East show strong results, large urban agglomerates continue to struggle. Notable performers include Pordenone, which remains in the top ten for the tenth consecutive year, and Cosenza, which rose to ninth place, becoming the highest-ranking city in Southern Italy.
Conversely, several cities face significant challenges. In Sicily, no city reached the top fifty, with Catania (103rd) and Palermo (104th) ranking near the bottom. Taranto also saw a decline, dropping to 94th place, while Naples placed last at 106th. Key areas of concern across the country include air quality, waste management, water network dispersion, and sustainable mobility.
