Miranda Lambert Secures 'The House That Built Me' After LoCash Passes on Song

Songwriters Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin wrote "The House That Built Me" and initially pitched it to Blake Shelton. The duo LoCash later says they were offered the song and held it for a year, but without a label or a binding contract they could not record it. Miranda Lambert ultimately recorded the track in 2009. The song reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart in 2010 and earned Lambert a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

LoCash explained that Nashville’s informal “handshake” system means song rights are not contractually binding until formally agreed, leaving them unable to compete with Lambert’s version. The duo expressed frustration, noting the missed opportunity despite their early involvement with the song’s creators.
