Mirandese language receives new strategic and educational support

The Mirandese language is undergoing significant institutional and educational reinforcement through new strategic initiatives and cultural celebrations in Miranda do Douro. To mark the anniversary of Law No. 7/99, which recognized Mirandese as an official language, celebrations will include the presentation of the first Mirandese textbook for the 1st grade and a translation of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic.

Literary contributions also feature prominently, including a Mirandese edition of “O Nosso Reino” by Valter Hugo Mãe. Educational support is being bolstered by the José Leite de Vasconcelos Teacher Training Center and a postgraduate program for Mirandese teachers offered by the Polytechnic University of Bragança in partnership with the Mission Structure for the Promotion of the Mirandese Language (EMPLM).

The EMPLM has also unveiled a four-year strategic plan organized around six pillars. This plan aims to safeguard and promote the language by increasing its presence in public institutions, creating a “living laboratory” for technological and linguistic research, and fostering intergenerational transmission through teacher training. The strategy also seeks to establish Mirandese as a language of contemporary artistic creation and to leverage its use in tourism and territorial development to create economic value.
