Mircea Rusu, Romanian rugby legend and European champion, dies at 93

Mircea Rusu, a prominent figure in Romanian rugby, has passed away in Cluj-Napoca at the age of 93. He died during the night between October 23 and 24.

As a flanker, Rusu was a key member of the Grivița Roșie team, with whom he won eight national titles and the European Champions Cup in 1964 following a victory against Mont-de-Marsan. He was also part of the Romanian national team during the 1960s, a generation that achieved a world-record 25 consecutive international matches without defeat.

Born in Blaj in July 1933, Rusu began his rugby career at Locomotiva ICF to access canteen meals after his father, a political prisoner, left him without housing or food. He later moved to Grivița Roșie in 1956, where he played until 1970. His career included a debut for the Romanian national team against East Germany on October 27, 1959.
