Mirella Castriota, influential Calabrian dance instructor, dies at 92

Mirella Castriota, a prominent figure in the dance community of Cosenza and the Calabria region, has passed away at the age of 92.

As the founder of the Dance Studio in Rende, established in 1982, Castriota was instrumental in developing the local dance culture. Her school became a regional landmark, offering training in classical, modern, and tap dance. Beyond technical instruction, she was widely recognized for emphasizing discipline, rigor, and the educational value of movement.

Under her leadership, the school produced many students who performed on national television and in various professional settings. She also directed the Skanderberg Ballet Company. The legacy of her work continues through the Performing Art Studio, currently supervised by her daughter, Patrizia Castriota. Her funeral is scheduled for August 27 at the Church of Sant’Aniello in Cosenza.
