Miri City Council recognized for waste management and tackling illegal dumping

The Miri City Council (MCC) has received the Public Service Excellence Recognition from the Waste Management Association of Malaysia (WMAM) for its efforts in waste management and urban sustainability. Miri Mayor Datuk Adam Yii Siew Sang stated that the recognition serves as motivation to continue improving service delivery to the community.

Key sustainability initiatives implemented by the MCC include the Miri City Buy-Back Campaign, Waste to Wealth programs, the development of green hubs, household and commercial waste segregation, and e-waste recovery.

Simultaneously, the council is intensifying efforts to combat illegal dumping. After identifying 17 hotspots across the city, the MCC has already improved or closed eight locations, with nine remaining under phased improvement and monitoring. Enforcement actions have been taken, resulting in 20 warning notices and six compounds issued to date. The council is utilizing physical deterrents, increased monitoring, and warning signs to prevent unauthorized waste disposal.
