MIRI President describes AI technology as a black box alchemy

Nate Soares, president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI), described the current state of artificial intelligence as a form of “alchemy” rather than a precise science. In an interview with Tucker Carlson, Soares explained that AI models function as a “black box” containing approximately one trillion adjustable parameters, or “knobs.”

According to Soares, these models are not built through conventional programming with clear instructions. Instead, an automated process adjusts these trillions of parameters over a period of about a year, consuming electricity comparable to that of a city, until the machine can produce coherent speech. He noted that while the technology can solve millions of difficult problems, researchers are still struggling to understand the internal logic of how these intelligences arrive at their responses. Soares emphasized the need for the field to transition from alchemy into a true science.
