Miriam González launches Democracia 21 for Spanish elections

Lawyer Miriam González Durántez has launched Democracia 21, a new political party intended to contest Spain’s upcoming general election on November 29. The party aims to address political polarization by promoting institutional regeneration, consensus-building, and practical solutions to social issues.

Key pillars of the party’s platform include affordable housing, a code of ethics for the government, increased transparency in media financing, and measures to prevent conflicts of interest. González also advocates for professionalizing public appointments and eliminating legal privileges for politicians (aforamientos).

Initially, the party intends to contest constituencies in Madrid and Barcelona before expanding nationwide. González, who describes herself as ‘liberal in the British sense’, seeks to appeal to voters frustrated by the current division between the two major political blocs. The launch comes amid a turbulent period in Spanish politics following Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s call for a snap election.
