Mirko Šagolj, prominent Bosnian journalist, dies in Sarajevo

Mirko Šagolj, one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most prominent journalists, analysts, and editors, has passed away in Sarajevo at the age of 85.

Šagolj had a career spanning four decades, including more than 30 years at the newspaper Oslobođenje. During his tenure, he held several high-level positions, including editor of the domestic news section, deputy editor-in-chief, and eventually editor-in-chief. He also served as a Moscow correspondent, covering the Soviet Union during significant political shifts.

During the Siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1995, Šagolj remained in the city, working with the Oslobođenje editorial team to continue publishing the newspaper under extreme conditions, often from an atomic shelter. Following his retirement from Oslobođenje in 2008, he continued to contribute analytical pieces to Start BiH magazine.
