Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has appointed Colonel Adrián Javier Álvarez Arizmendi as the interim Commander General of the Bolivian Police. This leadership change follows the resignation of General Mirko Sokol, who stepped down after nine months in office.

Sokol’s departure occurs amid investigations by the Public Ministry into leaked audio recordings involving allegations of corruption and influence peddling. While Sokol stated he had completed his cycle, his lawyer, Abel Loma, characterized the resignation as a “victory for the corrupt and drug traffickers,” alleging that Sokol faced systematic campaigns of discredit for his efforts to combat internal corruption.

Alongside Álvarez, the government has appointed Roger Roca Saavedra as subcommander and Franz Williams Cabrera Quispe as inspector general. President Paz has instructed the new command to lead a frontal fight against organized crime, drug trafficking, and narcoterrorism.

The new leadership also faces political pressure to address the arrest of former President Evo Morales and must manage the police force during a state of exception, with Álvarez emphasizing a commitment to law enforcement while prioritizing dialogue to resolve social conflicts.
