Nullarbor border sign to be replaced with new Indigenous-collaborative design
The Western Australia and South Australia border sign on the Nullarbor is set to be replaced with a new design titled ‘Ochre and Ocean’. Developed in collaboration with the Mirning Traditional Owners, the new structure was selected via a public vote, securing nearly 80 per cent of the preference.
The new 4.5-metre-tall structure will reflect the regional landscape, including ochre tones, limestone cliffs, and the blue of the ocean and sky. It will be accompanied by an 11-metre-long shelter. The project is expected to cost taxpayers $900,000, with Western Australia covering the full cost.
Demolition of the existing sign, which has served as a popular tourist stop for over three decades, is scheduled to begin in early October by a Kalgoorlie-based company. Installation of the new sign is anticipated to commence in early 2027.
