Miryokefalon Castle discovered in Denizli after 10 years of research
Academics have announced the discovery of the lost Miryokefalon Castle at the entrance of Kufi Valley in Çivril, Denizli. Following ten years of field research, researchers Prof. Dr. Hasan Kara and Doç. Dr. İbrahim Balık identified the site, which was previously described in historical sources as ruined and dilapidated.
The settlement area is estimated to span between 150 and 300 decares, situated approximately 100 to 120 meters above the plain. Archaeological findings at the site include wall foundations extending dozens of meters, two towers, water wells or cisterns, and ceramic remains dating from the 4th century BC to the 6th century AD. The discovery supports the historical thesis that the Battle of Myriokephalon took place in the Denizli region.
In anticipation of the 850th anniversary of the victory, a series of commemorative events are scheduled in Çivril. The program includes site visits to the Upper Kufi Gorge, academic panels, official ceremonies, and cultural performances such as traditional folk dances and archery.
