Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir sworn in as Bangladesh President

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a veteran leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has been sworn in as the 23rd President of Bangladesh. The inauguration ceremony took place at Bangabhaban, the official presidential residence in Dhaka, where Acting Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal administered the oath of office.

Alamgir’s election follows the first contested presidential vote in Bangladesh in 35 years. He secured 255 votes in the national Parliament, defeating opposition candidate Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, who received 88 votes. The election was necessitated by the resignation of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin on health grounds.

Following the ceremony, Alamgir expanded the cabinet, swearing in five new members to bring the total cabinet strength to 55. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, and former Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.

International leaders, including Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, have extended congratulations. Zardari also invited Alamgir to visit Pakistan to strengthen bilateral ties. Nigeria also congratulated the nation, describing the election as a significant moment for democratic progress.
