Mirza Fakhrul nominated as BNP presidential candidate
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has nominated its Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, as its candidate for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for August 20. The decision was finalized during a meeting between senior party leaders and BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Following the nomination, the 78-year-old veteran politician resigned from his positions as BNP Secretary General and as a member of the party’s highest policy-making standing committee.
Alamgir, a former Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, enters the race with significant parliamentary support. The BNP currently holds a two-thirds majority in parliament following the February 12 elections. The election follows the July 24 resignation of former president Mohammed Shahabuddin due to health issues. Currently, Parliamentary Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad is serving as Acting President.
In competition, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), a partner in the alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, has fielded Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmad, who has already submitted his nomination papers to the Election Commission.
