Misericordia Hospital receives non-invasive jaundice screening tool

The Pediatrics and Neonatology department at Misericordia Hospital in Grosseto has received a transcutaneous bilirubinometer valued at approximately 7,000 euros. The device allows for the rapid, non-invasive screening of neonatal jaundice without the need for traditional heel-prick blood tests.

This new technology enables medical staff to identify at-risk infants as early as 24 weeks of gestational age. The device is integrated with the hospital’s IT system, allowing results to be transferred immediately to the infant’s electronic medical record, which eliminates waiting times for laboratory results. Susanna Falorni, director of Pediatrics and Neonatology, noted that effective screening can reduce hospital readmissions and shorten hospital stays.

The donation was made possible by Lux Events and the Finanzia & Friends Team through proceeds from various local community events, including the ‘Trofeo di Natale’ and ‘Stop alla Mafia 2026’ football tournaments, as well as the ‘Visit Maremma 2026’ historic vehicle rally.
