Misinformation debunked: Viral video falsely claims Russian aircraft aided European wildfires

A viral video circulating on social media falsely claims to show Russian aircraft providing assistance to Europe during devastating wildfires. The footage, which depicts firefighting planes scooping water from Lake Sainte-Croix in southern France, has been identified as mislabeled disinformation.

The aircraft shown are actually Canadair amphibious planes operated by the French Civil Protection. The planes can be identified by their distinctive red and white wing stripes, yellow-red coloring, and the word ‘Sécurité’ visible on the fuselage. Furthermore, the video features propeller-driven aircraft, whereas Russian firefighting planes typically utilize jet engines.

Official records from the European Commission confirm that Russia was not among the nations providing firefighting equipment or personnel to France or Spain. Instead, assistance was provided by several EU member states and Turkey, including Czechia, Croatia, Germany, Portugal, Slovakia, and Sweden.
