Misinformation: Haiti earthquake photo falsely linked to Colombia quake

A photograph of a smiling child being rescued from rubble, which has been circulating on social media following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Colombia on August 10, is being identified as misinformation.

The image was not taken in Colombia. It was originally captured by photographer Matthew McDermott for the New York Post in January 2010. The photo depicts the rescue of a seven-year-old boy named Kiki Joachin during the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010.

Fact-checking efforts confirm the image was published by various international outlets, including CNN and China Daily, over a decade ago. The boy in the photo was rescued by urban search and rescue teams from New York and Virginia.
