Misinformation links Indian mosque demolition to Nepal floods

Claims circulating on social media suggesting that the destruction of a mosque caused major flooding in Nepal are false. The viral content features footage of a mosque being partially dismantled, which is being falsely linked to catastrophic flooding and landslides that hit the Himalayan region in August 2026.

Verification shows the footage actually depicts the Jama Masjid in Mughalsarai, located in the Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh, India. The video was originally published in May 2026 by the Indian page ‘The Shastra’. The dismantling of the structure was not an attack, but rather a response to local authorities' notices that parts of the building encroached on space designated for road expansion and drainage channels.
