Misinformation regarding Iran nuclear program reaches Israeli and US officials
A false claim regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions, originating from an anonymous X account based in India, has spread through social media to reach Israeli media and high-level officials in the United States.
On August 5, the post falsely attributed a statement to Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, claiming Tehran would never abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons while Israel and the U.S. maintain their arsenals. The misinformation included an AI-generated image of a mushroom cloud.
The claim was amplified by accounts such as ‘Mossad Commentary’ and subsequently broadcast by Israeli media, including Channel 14. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu utilized the unverified claim in a speech, illustrating how digital misinformation can influence political narratives and military justifications during the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.
