Misiones Governor warns of healthcare funding crisis

Misiones Governor Hugo Passalacqua has announced that the province will use its own funds to cover the costs of essential medicines following the suspension of the national Remediar program. Speaking at the V National Congress of the Council of Provincial Social Works (COSSPRA) in Puerto Iguazú, Passalacqua stated that the loss of national funding represents a deficit of approximately one billion pesos for the province.

The Governor also highlighted a significant shift in healthcare demand, noting a monumental transfer of patients from the private sector to the public system. He attributed this trend to the increasing difficulty for citizens to maintain private medical coverage.

During the same congress, COSSPRA President Carlos Funes addressed the structural crisis facing the Argentine healthcare system. Funes noted that provincial social works currently provide assistance to 7 million people, which is 2 million more than PAMI. He warned that demographic shifts, including aging populations and declining birth rates, combined with the high cost of medicines, are threatening the long-term sustainability of the system.
