Misiones moves to repeal glyphosate ban
The province of Misiones is moving to repeal the general ban on glyphosate established in 2023. A new legislative project, supported by 18 deputies from the Movimiento por lo que Viene bloc, seeks to derogate Article 7 of Law VIII Nº 103.
Instead of a mandatory prohibition with a fixed deadline, the proposed reform makes the transition to bioinputs conditional. The use of environmentally friendly phytosanitaries will only be required once national authorities or the regulatory bodies of international purchasing countries have authorized suitable alternatives. This shift moves the decision-making process from a provincial political calendar to one dictated by regulatory, sanitary, and commercial validation.
Agricultural producers have expressed relief regarding the change. Critics of the original law argued that the ban was implemented without technically proven or internationally recognized substitutes, creating uncertainty for major export sectors such as tea, yerba mate, and forestry. The provincial Executive Branch will be empowered to set the specific terms, conditions, and timelines for any future transition.
