Misiones repeals law banning glyphosate use by 2030

The Legislature of Misiones has unanimously repealed articles of a law that would have prohibited the use of glyphosate in agricultural activities starting in 2030. The decision, promoted by Governor Hugo Passalacqua, follows concerns from the provincial productive sector regarding export risks.

The reversal comes after the Tea Association of the USA Inc. warned Argentine tea producers that it would stop importing tea if the province moved forward with substituting glyphosate for bioherbicides that lack international certification. The United States imports approximately 66% of Argentine tea, and the association noted that without established import tolerances for new local chemicals, treated tea could be classified as adulterated.

Previously, in mid-2023, Carlos Rovira had helped pass the law to transition toward biological herbicides. At that time, the company Agrosustentable had already established a plant in the Posadas Industrial Park to distribute bio-based products to local producers.
