MISO proposes new grid reliability rules for large loads and data centers
The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) has proposed new interconnection reliability requirements for large loads to address rising electricity demand. The framework, filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, includes ramping and ride-through specifications. MISO defines large loads as those exceeding 50 MW, with a specific “computational load” classification for data centers with at least 25 MW of IT equipment demand. This move follows similar actions by PJM Interconnection and ERCOT to stabilize the grid against sudden load changes. MISO expects annual demand growth of 1% to 2% through 2044.
Separately, a study by S&P Global CERA Consulting suggests that targeted transmission expansion in the Eastern Interconnection could provide up to $15.3 billion in net system value by 2050. The report, supported by the Electricity Customer Alliance and National Grid, argues that investing in high-value transmission projects can lower retail electricity rates, enhance system reliability, and improve resilience to extreme weather. These investments are framed as essential for supporting industrial expansion, electrification, and national security amid increasing electricity demand in the United States.
