British Columbia father seeks safety reforms after daughter's death

Marc White, a resident of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, has launched a petition to demand increased safety protections for unhoused individuals operating near heavy machinery. The campaign follows the death of his daughter, Stacey Reid, who was killed by a boom lift at a commercial property in Mission shortly after her 21st birthday.

White alleges that the incident was a result of negligence rather than a “freak accident,” noting that the operator had a spotter present at the time of the fatality. He is calling for stricter safety protocols to protect vulnerable citizens residing in areas where construction and heavy machinery are active.

Reid had been living on the streets in the Mission and Abbotsford areas for several years. White expressed frustration with the perceived lack of police attention toward such incidents, stating that without family involvement, her death might not have received public attention.
