Mississauga Animal Services in Ontario is reducing dog and cat adoption fees to $25 to address overcrowding in its facility. The “Homeward Bound” event, running from August 8 to 22, offers these significantly lower rates to encourage more pets to find permanent homes.
Regular adoption fees typically range from approximately $190 for cats and kittens to $280 plus HST for dogs and puppies. Greg Madeley, lead for animal care and well-being at the shelter, noted that the initiative aims to move animals out of the shelter environment, which he described as “not a great environment” for them.
Despite the reduced costs, the shelter maintains a rigorous adoption process. Applicants must undergo interviews, meet animals with their families, and demonstrate an understanding of the financial and lifestyle commitments required for pet ownership. Adopters must be at least 18 years old.
