Mississippi 2027 election cycle begins with anticipated statewide turnover

Mississippi’s 2027 election cycle is beginning to take shape as candidates prepare for upcoming statewide races. Political strategists suggest significant turnover is likely, with five to six of the eight statewide offices expected to change hands. The governor’s race is anticipated to be particularly competitive, potentially seeing its widest field of candidates since 1987.

While Republican candidates have begun announcing bids, the Mississippi Democratic Party is adopting a different strategy. Democratic Party Chairman Cheikh Taylor stated that the party intends to focus on upcoming congressional midterm opportunities before finalizing its list of statewide candidates. Taylor expressed optimism regarding several races, including potential challenges to Republican incumbents in various U.S. House districts and a possible bid by District Attorney Scott Colom against U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith.

Strategists note that the primary elections, specifically the runoffs scheduled for August 2027, will be the most critical dates for voters, as many races are expected to require a second round of voting to determine a winner.
