Mississippi Attorney General rules Senatobia police shooting of toddler justified

Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced that the use of force by a Senatobia police officer in the June 14 shooting death of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley was justified. The decision follows an investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation into the incident that occurred in a Walmart parking lot.

Officers had responded to a shoplifting report involving alleged stolen diapers and baby clothes. According to investigators, the vehicle carrying Wiley, his mother Vellesiya Wiley, and a friend attempted to evade police by driving toward officers. During the encounter, an officer fired into the vehicle, killing the toddler and critically injuring the driver.

Newly released body-camera and surveillance footage shows a chaotic scene where the vehicle reversed into a parked car and appeared to lurch toward officers before shots were fired. While the driver’s attorney maintains the officer had no choice but to fire, the Wiley family and civil rights attorney Ben Crump have criticized the ruling. They have called for the release of all body-camera and surveillance footage, noting that the Mississippi Department of Public Safety has not yet made the videos public.
