Mississippi colleges open food pantries to support students

Colleges in Mississippi are establishing food pantries and resource centers to assist students struggling with the rising costs of housing, groceries, and transportation.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) opened a food pantry on September 1, providing groceries and personal care items such as toothpaste and laundry detergent. Jonathan Nutt, UMMC director of student services, noted that the initiative aims to support students whose academic demands or lack of financial support make it difficult to cover living expenses.

Other institutions are also implementing support systems. The University of Southern Mississippi’s Eagle’s Nest Food Pantry distributed nearly 900 pounds of food and hygiene products to 94 people during the first week of August. Additionally, Delta State University utilizes Okra Threads, an on-campus thrift store, to assist students.

These efforts respond to broader trends in student instability. A 2023 survey by the Hope Center for Basic Needs indicated that 59% of college students lack access to at least one basic need, with 41% reporting food insecurity.
