Mississippi DA seeks dismissal of murder charges against Tameshia Shelton
District Attorney Scott Colom has requested that a judge dismiss the murder indictment against Tameshia Shelton, arguing that the state lacks sufficient evidence to prove she killed Danelle Young in 2009.
Shelton previously served 11 years in prison for the shooting death of Young, her sister’s boyfriend. Her conviction was overturned by the Mississippi Court of Appeals, which found that prosecutors failed to prove her guilt “beyond a reasonable doubt.” Following a Mississippi Supreme Court ruling, Shelton was released on bond in June.
A recent investigation suggested that evidence, including an apparent suicide note from Young, points toward the death being a suicide rather than a murder. This evidence was reportedly not seen by the jury during Shelton’s 2015 trial. If Circuit Judge James T. Kitchens Jr. grants the dismissal, it will end a legal case spanning 17 years.
