Mississippi debates sustainability of 23 public colleges

Mississippi lawmakers are debating whether the state can sustain its 23 public colleges and universities. The discussion intensified following the introduction of House Bill 1284 by Representative Trey Lamar, a Republican from Senatobia.

The proposed legislation sought to merge six community college districts to reduce administrative costs by consolidating 15 districts into 12. Specific proposed mergers included Coahoma Community College with Mississippi Delta Community College, Meridian with East Mississippi, and Southwest Mississippi with Copiah-Lincoln. While the bill would not have closed any campuses, it faced opposition from students and college leaders through a petition.

House Bill 1284 died in committee. Representative Donnie Scoggin, a Republican from Ellisville who co-chairs the House consolidation committee, stated the bill was not advanced because there was insufficient time to study the issue thoroughly. Lamar noted that overlapping districts can result in property owners paying higher taxes to support multiple institutions, and argued that savings from consolidation could be reinvested into the community college system.
