MDOT announces $400M infrastructure project for I-20 and I-55

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced a $400-million renovation project, dubbed the ‘Big Fix,’ to upgrade major roadways in Hinds and Rankin counties. The multi-year initiative will focus on Interstate 20 and Interstate 55, aiming to modernize infrastructure to meet current traffic demands and safety standards.

The project includes the rehabilitation of 36 bridges and the resurfacing of 32 miles of roadway. Construction is scheduled to begin next month and is expected to continue through late 2028. To facilitate bridge work, motorists should anticipate significant disruptions, including multiple weeks-long closures and full interstate closures on I-20 in both directions during the summers of 2027 and 2028.

During these periods, traffic is expected to be diverted to Interstate 220, Interstate 55, and U.S. Highway 80. The targeted sections of I-20 are among the state’s busiest corridors, handling upwards of 90,000 to 110,000 vehicles daily. MDOT officials stated the improvements are intended to extend the life of the interstate and ensure long-term reliability for commuters and commercial freight.
