Mississippi high school football teams face heat safety challenges
High school football teams across Mississippi are navigating preseason preparations complicated by extreme heat and strict safety regulations. Coaches are closely monitoring wet-bulb temperatures, which measure the combination of heat and humidity to determine how effectively sweat can cool the human body. When readings reach 92 degrees, Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) rules require outdoor activities to be canceled or moved indoors.
These heat restrictions have forced teams like Baldwyn and Tupelo to reschedule practices to nighttime to ensure player safety. Coaches have expressed concerns regarding the logistics of these changes and the limited time available for players to practice in full pads before the regular season begins on August 28.
Despite these challenges, several teams are moving into the scrimmage phase. Vicksburg High and Warren Central are scheduled for preseason scrimmages this Friday, providing coaches with an opportunity to evaluate new lineups and player aggression in game-like situations, as intense heat has previously limited the ability to practice full-contact drills.
