Mississippi launches $8.5M workforce training initiative
Mississippi will implement a $8.5 million statewide initiative to expand Workforce Pell training, aimed at providing residents with short-term credentials for high-demand industries. The funding is provided entirely by the U.S. Department of Labor through the Strengthening Community Colleges Training Grants program.
Northwest Mississippi Community College will serve as the lead institution for the project, coordinating efforts across all 15 of the state’s public community colleges. The state’s workforce development office, AccelerateMS, will act as an implementation partner. The program is designed to allow eligible students to apply federal Pell Grant aid toward shorter, job-focused training rather than traditional degree programs.
The initiative is expected to serve more than 1,500 participants and support at least 19 short-term training programs. Key sectors targeted for development include advanced manufacturing, shipbuilding, construction, information infrastructure, and healthcare.
