Mississippi lawmakers consider school district consolidation

Mississippi state leaders are exploring the consolidation of school districts to address declining student enrollment and budget constraints. Over the last decade, the state has lost thousands of public school students, leaving 138 districts with reduced funding.

House Speaker Jason White has established a select committee to investigate how merging districts might benefit students. Lawmakers argue that the state currently maintains too many small, underperforming districts that incur high administrative costs. Potential candidates for consolidation include Tallahatchie, Copiah, Washington, and Bolivar counties.

While House Education Chairman Rob Roberson stated the push aims to improve education, he acknowledged that cost savings and administrative changes are significant factors. Local community members have expressed concern that the primary motivation is financial, fearing that school closures could negatively impact small towns and stall local progress.
