Mississippi mayor criticizes flag protocol for Dolly Parton

Ken Adams, the mayor of Olive Branch, Mississippi, has criticized a presidential order to fly United States flags at half-staff following the death of country singer Dolly Parton. Parton passed away on August 25 at the age of 80 after a battle with cancer.

While expressing deep respect for Parton’s artistic legacy and humanitarian contributions, Adams argued that the gesture of lowering flags should be reserved for specific circumstances. He stated that such honors should be limited to military heroes, first responders killed in the line of duty, presidents, or national leaders whose impact is deemed extraordinary.

Adams noted that his position is not political and does not aim to diminish Parton’s status as a great American. Instead, he expressed concern that using the gesture for non-military or non-political figures might detract from the symbolic weight of the honor in the future. He also emphasized the principle of local autonomy, suggesting that elected local officials should have the discretion to apply their own judgment regarding such federal or state directives.
