Senatobia police officer resigns after fatal shooting of 1-year-old boy

Sgt. Hunter Foster of the Senatobia Police Department has resigned following the fatal shooting of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley. The incident occurred on June 14 in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Mississippi, during a response to an alleged shoplifting call involving diapers and baby clothes.

Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch recently concluded a months-long investigation, ruling that Foster’s use of force was “justified” because the vehicle was moving toward officers. However, the family of Kohen Wiley and civil rights attorney Ben Crump dispute this finding. After reviewing released body-camera footage, the family maintains the shooting was excessive and reckless, noting that the fatal shots appeared to be fired into the side of the vehicle.

An independent autopsy commissioned by the family classified the death as a homicide. While the state has cleared the officer of criminal wrongdoing, the family is calling for a federal investigation. Neither the mother, Vellesiya Wiley, nor her friend, Latoya Ferrell, have been charged in connection with the alleged shoplifting.
