Mississippi redistricting hearings face intense protests

A redistricting hearing at the Mississippi State Capitol concluded on Thursday amid intense protests and heated exchanges. The hearing, held in Jackson, served as the final session in a series of public meetings that began in August across various regions of the state.

During the session, Mississippi State Auditor Shad White advocated for congressional redistricting, suggesting that the Mississippi Delta requires different leadership than that provided by incumbent U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson. White's comments were met with vocal opposition from attendees, including shouts of ‘racist’ and boos.

Opponents of the redistricting efforts argued that the proposed changes represent a power grab intended to diminish Black political influence and solidify Republican control. The Republican-led committee, which includes 16 Republicans and 4 Democrats, is considering maps that could reshape the state's political landscape. Currently, Republicans hold three of Mississippi's four seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
