Mississippi school districts implement stricter cellphone policies

School districts in Mississippi are implementing stricter policies to limit student cellphone use and increase engagement.

The Natchez-Adams School District is introducing signal-blocking cellphone pouches for approximately 1,500 students in grades five through 12. Each pouch costs about $20. The district aims to maximize instructional time and reduce distractions. Unlike some models, these pouches do not use magnet locks, allowing students to access phones easily during emergencies. However, the pouches feature a loud Velcro seal designed to alert teachers if opened inappropriately during class.

In the Vicksburg Warren School District, administrators report early success with a policy that requires personal electronic devices to be turned off and out of sight throughout the school day. Principals noted that students are engaging in more face-to-face conversations in hallways and cafeterias. Additionally, officials observed that limiting social media access during school hours may help interrupt cycles of student conflict often triggered by online interactions.
