Mississippi State athletics face rebuilding challenges across football and basketball
Mississippi State University is navigating transitional periods in both its football and men's basketball programs.
In football, head coach Jeff Lebby seeks to overcome previous conference struggles after a 1–15 record in SEC matchups during his first two seasons. Following a strong 4–0 start that saw the Bulldogs climb to No. 16 in the AP Poll, the team has recently faced three consecutive losses and a season-ending injury to sophomore quarterback Kamario Taylor.
In men's basketball, coach Chris Jans enters a “prove it” year following a season where the Bulldogs missed the NCAA Tournament. While senior Josh Hubbard remains a premier scorer and record-setting three-point shooter, the team must integrate new talent to replace several graduated players. Key additions include R. J. Johnson from Kennesaw State, Kendyl Sanders from Utah, and center N. D. Okafor from Washington State.
