Missolonghi Lagoon faces ecological crisis from pollution

The Missolonghi Lagoon, specifically the Aitoliko area, is facing a severe ecological crisis due to uncontrolled pollution. Local fishermen report that industrial waste, urban sewage from malfunctioning treatment plants, and agricultural pesticides are flowing into the lagoon.

This contamination has resulted in intense odors, the formation of mud layers on the water surface, and a significant threat to the region's rich fauna and local fishing industry. Nikos Kranis, president of the Achloos Fishermen's Association of Missolonghi-Aitoliko, stated that the area has been deteriorating for years and is now reaching a breaking point.

Concerns have also been raised regarding unutilized funds and infrastructure. A budget of 21.4 million euros approved in 2015 for the lagoon's protection was reportedly never utilized. Additionally, the subsidence of historical bridges in Aitoliko, caused by heavy truck traffic, has obstructed water circulation and exacerbated the pollution levels.
