Missouri judge clears new congressional map for November elections
A Cole County Circuit Court judge has ruled that Missouri’s newly drawn congressional map will remain in place for the November 2026 midterm elections. Judge Daniel Green sided with Republican Secretary of State Denny Hoskins, who had rejected a petition containing thousands of signatures that sought to force a statewide referendum on the redistricting plan.
In his ruling, Green stated that the Missouri Constitution does not provide a clear mechanism for reallocating authority over congressional redistricting from the General Assembly to a referendum process. The new map, which has been described as favorable to the Republican Party, was implemented following a special legislative session called by Governor Mike Kehoe. The redistricting notably impacts the 5th Congressional District, reassigning portions of Kansas City to neighboring Republican-held districts and extending the remaining area into rural, Republican-leaning regions.
The activist group People Not Politicians, which filed the lawsuit to challenge the map, has announced plans to appeal the decision to the Missouri Supreme Court.
