Missouri DOT Announces 11‑Month I‑70 Closure in Kansas City for 2027
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) announced that Interstate 70 through downtown Kansas City will be closed for 11 months, from January to December 2027. The closure, spanning Prospect Avenue to Van Brunt Boulevard, is intended to allow mainline I‑70 reconstruction to be completed more quickly and safely.
MoDOT warned that the shutdown will have significant regional traffic impacts but said the strategy will minimize overall inconvenience to motorists, pedestrians and workers. Drivers are urged to use alternate routes such as I‑435, I‑35, I‑29, I‑635, US‑71 or I‑470, and to follow detour signs and real‑time information on MoDOT’s traveler‑information map. Motorists should expect possible delays, plan ahead, and observe reduced speeds in work zones.
The agency will keep most cross‑streets open during construction and encourages the use of GPS and other navigation tools to find the best routes while the closure is in effect.
