Missouri implements new public safety and infrastructure laws

Several new laws enacted by the Missouri General Assembly took effect on August 28, 2026, targeting public safety, crime, and infrastructure protection.

Key provisions include new criminal penalties for damaging critical infrastructure and restrictions on unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), which are now prohibited from flying below 400 feet near such facilities. The legislation also updates regulations for open-air facilities, setting a capacity requirement of 500 people.

Regarding transportation, the Missouri Department of Transportation is authorized to study increasing speed limits to 75 mph on rural interstates. Additionally, new school bus safety measures have been implemented, including a five-point assessment for specific violations and reclassifying convictions that cause serious injury or death as class D felonies. The Missouri Department of Revenue will also oversee new fines and license suspension protocols for repeat offenders.
