Missouri municipalities see divergent tax results in local elections

Municipal voters in Missouri have reached opposing conclusions regarding local sales taxes, resulting in different fiscal outlooks for Columbia and St. Louis County.

In Columbia, voters approved a 1% public safety sales tax expected to generate approximately $38 million annually. City leaders are now determining how to integrate this revenue into the budget. While the new tax is designated for public safety, officials noted that the law does not prevent the city from adjusting existing General Fund support for police and fire services.

Conversely, St. Louis County faces potential budget cuts after voters rejected Proposition U, a proposed 3.5% online sales tax. County Executive Sam Page warned that without this recurring revenue, the county could face a deficit of at least $50 million next year once NFL settlement funds are exhausted. Expected cuts may impact public parks, road repairs, and public safety, with the possibility of nearly 100 police officers losing their jobs.
