Missouri nonprofit and foundation provide free vision screenings for children
The Vision Council Foundation partnered with KidSight, a Missouri-based nonprofit, to conduct free vision screenings for 1,309 children on October 13 in recognition of World Sight Day. The initiative spanned 15 locations, including schools, daycares, and Head Start programs, across 11 Missouri counties.
Of the children screened, 145 were identified with potential vision issues such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or amblyopia. KidSight staff are working individually with these families to provide results, locate child-friendly eye care, and offer financial assistance for exams and glasses when necessary.
Using handheld devices that provide rapid results, the program is capable of screening children as young as six months old. Leadership from both organizations emphasized that early screening is a critical step in ensuring children can succeed in educational environments.
